Coimbatore Airport

Completed 2011

The extension to the existing Coimbatore Airport is an engineering contract. As the airport planning laid down the functional footprint, the three dimensional architectural and structural quality of the building was developed by the consultants.

Based on the footprint, the extension to Coimbatore Airport is conceptualized as a wrap that extends into the new arrival hall marked by a curved canopy and angled glass enclosure. A louvered system along the existing building gives way to the minimal glass enclosure canopy that wraps two other sides of the old building. The arrival hall itself is a 75m x 85m hall formed by a space frame structure supported on 4 columns as an inner wall structure of vertical luminaries’ scales and defines the arrival space.
